Fire is a natural ecological factor on most Texas rangelands.  Fire effectively suppresses most woody plants while encouraging grass and forb growth.  Sound range, livestock and wildlife management must accompany the use of fire if benefits are to be realized.

Generally, the prescription for a successful burn includes wind speed of 5 to 15 MPH, steady in direction, air temperature of 40 to 80 degrees F, relative humidity from 25 to 60 percent and a uniform continuity of 1500 pounds per acre.

Prescribed burning is a viable improvement practice for most Texas rangeland.  When integrated with other practices, fire can be used to maintain desired vegetation composition and structure.

Farm and Ranch Construction and Burn Specialists Inc. are trained as Prescribe Burn Managers and available for your extended planning and execution of rangeland management.  Call us for more information.

The objectives for prescription burning should be:

1.  Improved pasture accessibility

2.  Increased production of forage and browse

3.  Suppression of most brush and cacti species.

4.  Control of selected forbs and/or grass species.

5.  Improved herbaceous composition

6.  Improved grazing for livestock and wildlife.

7.  Improved forage quality.

8.  Increased animal production

9.  Removal of excess mulch and debris

10. Control of certain parasites and pests.

11. Improved Nutrient cycling.
